It’s hard to not respond with texting because you’re not exactly sure what somebody said. You didn’t see the nuances in their face or hear the nuances in their voice. And that changes the nature of human communication.

give your daughters difficult names. give your daughters names that command the full use of tongue. my name makes you want to tell me the truth. my name doesn’t allow me to trust anyone that cannot pronounce it right.

a few days before graduation I got an email from the school’s registrars office with the subject line “pronouncing your name.”

Ooh this is a good one. “ my name doesn’t allow me to trust anyone that cannot pronounce it right.” Reading this I just realised that’s how I’ve lived my life and I must say it has served me well. The effort someone puts into trying to pronounce my name tells me volumes about them. I honestly just had an AHA MOMENT! My name taught me how to read people. How to see past their phoniness(for the most part.) I love my name. I’ve always loved it. Now I admire it. And my gran who named me. Thank you Warsan Shire.
